Road safety

"Obey traffic law and build a congestion-free Dhaka."

For the public

  1. 01 Use foot-overbridges / underpasses / zebra crossings; crossing anywhere at random is a punishable offence.
  2. 02 Do not use headphones or talk on the phone while crossing the road.
  3. 03 Use the footpath when walking.
  4. 04 Do not board or get off a moving vehicle.
  5. 05 Do not keep construction materials or shop goods on the road or footpath.
  6. 06 Do not risk travelling on the roof, bumper or footboard of a bus.
  7. 07 Do not board or alight except at a bus bay / designated stop.
  8. 08 Passengers should never urge the driver to speed.
  9. 09 Refrain from smoking on public transport.
  10. 10 Do not cross a railway crossing while the red light is on; cross after the train has passed.
  11. 11 Do not eat anything given by strangers while travelling.
  12. 12 Give priority to persons with disabilities, the elderly, children and women in using seats.
  13. 13 Do not stand on the road waiting for transport except at a bus bay.

For parents and teachers

  1. 01 Give young children basic knowledge of traffic rules.
  2. 02 Encourage them to walk on the footpath.
  3. 03 Teach children that safety comes first.
  4. 04 Familiarise children with traffic law.

For drivers

  1. 01 Before driving, check all documents and your driving licence, and keep up-to-date papers with you.
  2. 02 Refrain from unnecessary honking.
  3. 03 Drive with your seatbelt fastened.
  4. 04 Obey the speed limit.
  5. 05 Do not change lanes frequently.
  6. 06 Do not overtake unnecessarily; overtake with care.
  7. 07 Do not use loose or temporary stickers other than a permanent institutional sticker.
  8. 08 Check the vehicle's parts to prevent accidents.
  9. 09 Do not drive against the flow of traffic.
  10. 10 Do not obstruct traffic by parking on the carriageway.
  11. 11 Do not carry passengers beyond capacity.
  12. 12 Do not drive while tired, unwell or intoxicated.
  13. 13 Always keep the left lane open.
  14. 14 Avoid picking up and dropping passengers at intersections.
  15. 15 Know and obey traffic law and signals.
  16. 16 When stopping, always pull over to the left of the road.
  17. 17 Use indicators when turning right or left.

For motorcyclists

  1. 01 Before riding, check all documents and your driving licence, and keep up-to-date papers with you.
  2. 02 Do not carry more than two people on a motorcycle.
  3. 03 Both rider and passenger must wear helmets.
  4. 04 Do not ride a motorcycle on the footpath.
  5. 05 Do not ride against the flow of traffic.
  6. 06 Do not obstruct traffic by parking on the carriageway.
  7. 07 Do not ride through traffic signals.

For owners

  1. 01 Before hiring a driver, verify their skill, valid licence and address.
  2. 02 Check the driver's knowledge of mechanics and traffic law.
  3. 03 Make sure the driver does not drive while intoxicated or unwell.
  4. 04 Give importance to adequate rest for the driver.
  5. 05 Provide two drivers for long-route buses / trucks / covered vans.
  6. 06 Keep the vehicle's up-to-date papers in the vehicle.
  7. 07 Refrain from fitting or using hydraulic horns, hooters and beacon lights (except where permitted).
  8. 08 Do not apply tinted film to microbus windows.
